Ask for Tripadvisor reviews after a genuine guest experience

A useful review reflects the guest's own visit and opinion. For a hotel, restaurant or attraction, the practical task is to make the correct listing easy to find and invite honest feedback without deciding what the guest should say.

Keep the invitation neutral

A simple follow-up can read:

Thank you for visiting [business]. If you would like to share your experience with other travellers, you can write an honest review on our Tripadvisor listing: [listing link]. We appreciate your feedback.

Check the business name and location before sending it. Let the guest choose whether to participate, which rating to give and what details to include. Do not write a review for the guest or supply a ready-made positive testimonial.

Avoid incentives and selective requests

Tripadvisor's guidance allows businesses to invite reviews but prohibits incentives such as discounts, gifts or prize draws. Its review guidelines also require firsthand experiences and reject selective solicitation of positive reviews. See incentivized-review guidance and review standards.

Build the invitation into a consistent process after a genuine visit. Do not make a reward dependent on a review, and do not offer staff a bonus for obtaining positive ratings.

Give staff a clear role

Staff can explain where to find the listing and thank guests for feedback. Their job is not to supervise a guest's rating. Resolve service problems through the normal support process, without making help conditional on changing or removing a review.

For businesses welcoming both Indian and international travellers, prepare a concise request in the languages your team can support. Preserve the same neutral meaning in each version. A guest should not have to navigate a long promotional message to find the listing.

Use feedback in operating decisions

Review recurring themes such as check-in clarity, cleanliness, accessibility information or booking expectations. Assign a practical owner to problems the business can address and check whether the same issue continues to appear.

Track the process over time, but avoid promises that a request campaign will produce a fixed number of reviews, a five-star average or a specific ranking. A review request creates an opportunity to share an experience; it does not purchase an opinion.

Keep factual listing details current so that travellers arrive with accurate expectations. The best follow-up cannot repair misleading information about the visit itself.
